Born in 1825, Furnivall was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. After a spell in the British Army, he began his career as a tutor at Charterhouse and then at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a lecturer in Latin at Cambridge, and then a professor at University College, London. In 1875, he was elected to the British Academy. Furnivall was also a noted scholar of medieval literature and the author of numerous books, including The English Church in the Middle Ages (1863), The New Testament in the English Tongue (1884), and The Romance of the English Nation (1895). He died in 1907.; 8vo; 302 pages.
