In The Walkaway, Scott Phillips tells the story of the twenty-three people who leave the safety of the human world to find a new one in a post-apocalyptic world. The novel is told in three parts: before the walkaway, during the walkaway, and after the walkaway.

Before the walkaway, the characters are living normal, everyday lives. They know nothing of the world outside of their towns and cities. The walkaway is a sudden, unexpected event that forces them to face the reality of their situation. As they leave the safety of their homes, they quickly realize that the world they know is gone.

During the walkaway, the characters face many challenges. They must find food and water, navigate through the dangerous wilderness, and protect themselves from the dangerous animals. They also have to contend with the other walkaways, who are often hostile and violent.
